Canada is home to three territories: the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, and Nunavut. Here are some of the attractions you can enjoy:

The Northwest Territories:

Start your trip with a good meal in the provincial capital of Yellowknife. Regional cuisine includes: muskox, bison, venison, and local fish. Then, head out for an energetic stroll around the Old Town.

Enjoy historic buildings and area shopping, but be sure to hike to Pilots’ Monument on “the Rock”. It is the city’s highest point and a great place to see and photograph the breathtaking view.

To learn more about area history, visit the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. Exhibits focus on aspects of Northern life, such as the history of aboriginal people and bush flying. See the only mooseskin boat ever preserved and beluga whales, too.

During the summer, Yellowknife gets about 20 hours of daylight per day. Take advantage of this and enjoy your favourite outdoor activities, like golfing and fishing at midnight!

The Yukon:

The province’s capital and largest city, Whitehorse, is a good first stop on your Yukon journey, as it is home to many animals and birds.

You can see these creatures by visiting the Yukon Wildlife Preserve or going on a guided wildlife safari. At the wildlife preserve, visitors can take a bus tour or go on foot to see animals like artic foxes, wood bison, and Canada lynx. In the winter months, a ski trail is available to those who want to ski past the animal pastures.

Tour companies also offer guided wildlife safaris. Depending on which tour you select, you may be taken by jeep or canoe or asked to strap on your backpack or snowshoes. Grizzly bears, moose, peregrine falcons, and more await you.

Dawson City is the perfect place to relive the golden past of the 19th-century Klondike Gold Rush. The city has numerous attractions from museums like the Dawson City Museum to the Downtown Hotel, home of the unique Sourtoe Cocktail. For five dollars, you can drink a beverage that contains a preserved human toe! If your lips touch the toe (swallowing it is not recommended), you receive a certificate.

Nunavut:

nunavut snow plainsBaffin Island is one of the natural wonders in Canada’s newest territory. Canada’s largest island can be reached by sea or air. Thrill-seekers are attracted to its high cliffs and try BASE jumping. Unfortunately, not all survive. It is safer to marvel at the island’s birds and sea creatures like the narwhal.

The Legislative Assembly of Nunavut complements the area’s natural beauty with its manmade elegance. The artistry of the Inuit people is on display, along with the territorial government at work. The legislative assembly is located in Iqaluit, the provincial capital, and free tours are available by appointment.

Also in Iqaluit, is the Alianait Arts Festival. The festival will give you a taste of the local music scene. Six concert dates remain for 2013.
